Perhaps Monfortino doesn't hold up quite as well as other classic Barolo such as Serafino, Damilano and Scarpa - or so we thought. That's why we're testing two perfect bottles from 1971 and 1955.
The Giacomo Conterno 1971 Barolo Riserva Monfortino has held up very well and shows no oxidation notes. The wine has herbs, dried rose petals, rosehip, full body, acidity, tannin and tar. The wine is dense, complex and elegant. 19.3/20 points.
The Giacomo Conterno 1955 Barolo Riserva Monfortino needs a lot of air despite its age and then changes from animal notes to dried rose petals and herbs. The wine has a medium body and is balanced and dense. The tannin has almost completely melted away. 18.5/20 points.
