NEW: Praise and blame of corked wines

1971 is one of Piedmont's vintages of the century. We taste Barolo and Barbaresco from this vintage by Giacomo Borgogno and Damilano. Together with Enrico Serafino, these are producers who make reliable aged wines.

The Giacomo Borgogno 1971 Barbaresco Riserva is a great wine for all fans of mature Barolo. The wine is complex and has notes of malt, herbs, black tea, dried rose petals, brasato, medium to full body, and is complex, balanced and long. 18.5/20 points.

The Giacomo Borgogno 1971 Barolo Riserva is very mature and has notes of undergrowth, agaricus mushrooms, medium to full body, medium length and is balanced but rather simple. 17/20 points.

Unfortunately, one bottle of Giacomo Borgogno 1971 Barolo Riserva Cellar Reserve was in poor condition and therefore could not be rated.

The Damilano 1971 Barolo is a powerful wine with density and pressure. The wine has ripe aromas of malt and agaricus mushrooms, but a youthful tannin structure. The wine is full, long and balanced and will certainly keep for many years to come. 18.8/20 points.

The Damilano 1971 Barbaresco has malt, chanterelles, undergrowth, moss, full body, good tannin structure and is long, balanced and dense. 18.3/20 points.
