NEW: Praise and blame of corked wines

There are fine wines for a birthday.

The Giulio Ferrari 2005 Riserva del Fondatore was disgorged in 2016 and is actually still far too young. The wine is now showing initial signs of drinking maturity, but will certainly need another two decades to reach its peak. It has blossom notes, medium body, spicy hints, a long finish, density, and perfect balance. Currently 18.8/20 points, but with the potential for much more.

The Riojanas 1968 Albina Gran Reserva Blanco Dulce initially has a potato sack like aroma and needs six hours in decanting for this note to disappear. But then you have a sensational white wine with medium sweetness, caramel, white nougat, medium body, balance, and a long finish. 19/20 points.

The Dominus 2009 Proprietary Red is just a touch too complex to be perfect. The wine has some animal notes, blackberry, elderberry, cassis, and blossom Aromas, full body, great structure, long finish, plenty of fine tannins, and slightly earthy notes on the finish from the 10% Cabernet Franc. The wine is complex, elegant, dense, fresh, and seems youthful. 19.8/20 points.
