Now we have German Riesling at its best.
2014 was not a stellar year for German Riesling, yet top producers still managed to craft great wines: The Kühling-Gillot 2014 Nackenheimer Rothenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs Wurzelecht displays blossom notes, apricot, pineapple, and exotic fruits - with hints of cake batter emerging upon aeration - along with medium-to-full body and a medium-to-long finish; it is fresh and highly mineral. The wine requires aeration in a decanter. 18.5/20 points.
The Heymann-Löwenstein 2016 Winninger Uhlen Riesling R (Rothlay) features spicy notes, slate, tobacco, and a touch of gummy bear candy; it has medium-to-full body and is fresh and highly mineral. The wine is actually still too young. Currently 18.5/20 points, with potential for more.
The Emrich-Schönleber 2018 Monzinger Halenberg Riesling R is a powerful wine with near-full body and pronounced minerality. It offers notes of tobacco and blossoms, and is balanced and long-finishing. Drinkable now, but it would benefit from a few more years of cellaring. 18.8/20 points, with potential to reach 19.
