Today we have sensational Rieslings from Germany. And there's a Syrah you'd never expect to find in Germany.
The Battenfeld-Spanier 2016 Mölsheimer Zellerweg Am Schwarzen Herrgott Riesling Großes Gewächs has lime, grapefruit, blossom notes, a touch of smokiness, a hint of apricot, a nearly full body, a firm structure, and is mineral, dense, balanced, long, fresh, and complex; 19/20 points with potential.
The Wittmann 2016 Westhofener Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs has apricot, blossom notes, sweet notes, and a hint of cake batter. It needs to be decanted for aeration. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with lime emerging after aeration, along with some tannins, a touch of fruit sweetness, a medium to long finish, and is fresh. 19/20 points.
The Peter Jakob Kühn 2016 Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus Riesling Großes Gewächs is a very modern wine with a significant amount of new oak. The wine has rosewood and blossom notes, is almost full-bodied, dense, creamy, medium to long, mineral, and complex. It has potential and needs aeration. 19.3/20 points.
The quality and durability are remarkable: The Knipser 2009 Syrah Reserve tastes distinctly of Syrah with its very intense black pepper note and is reminiscent of a Rhône Syrah with animal and slightly earthy notes, a touch of powdered sugar, full body, perfect balance, medium-firm tannins, perfect structure, and character. 19.5/20 points. One of the best Syrahs in Germany!
