NEW: Praise and blame of corked wines

We had a fantastic day at the Osteria Veglio restaurant in Annunziata, where we had the opportunity to taste all three Giacomo Conterno single-vineyard wines side-by-side. The tasting was not blind.

The Giacomo Conterno 2021 Barolo Arione is the most open wine. It offers notes of violets, blossoms, sweetness, and cake batter; it is full-bodied, phenolic, long, dense, and balanced. It is drinking very well already. 19/20 points.

The Giacomo Conterno 2021 Barolo Francia is the most complete wine and differs significantly from the Arione, even though the two vineyards lie side by side. The wine displays red fruit and blossom notes - with licorice emerging upon aeration - along with a full body and abundant fine tannins; it is phenolic, dense, balanced, long, and somewhat floral. It is still a bit closed but holds enormous potential. 19.3/20 points.

The Giacomo Conterno 2021 Barolo Ceretta sits somewhere between the Arione and the Francia - less closed than the Francia, yet not as fruit-forward as the Arione. Nevertheless, this is a great Barolo featuring red fruit, blossoms, and abundant rose petal notes; it is full-bodied and tannic, with great potential, and comes across as polished and rounded. It seems riper than the other two. 19/20 points.
