This was an amazing long evening. And so were the wines. Four times 19 points or more!
Heymann-Löwenstein, Mosel, 2012 Winninger Uhlen Riesling R (Rothlay), 13.5%: Dark golden colour, a powerful nose with orange zest, flowers, lime and a bit sweet with aeration this wine is full-bodied, balanced, long, fresh, elegant, powerful, structured and mineralic. It is a powerful and complex Character Riesling which needs a lot of air and should be decanted. This is a good successor to the perfect 2010. 19/20 points.
Morlet, California, 2018 Chardonnay Coup de Coeur, 14.6%: Together with Marcassin, Kongsgaard, Peter Michael and some other vineries, Morlet is one of the best producers in California, especially for Chardonnay. I would be glad to have such a quality in my glass each evening. The wine has a light bronze colour and a powerful nose of blossoms, citrus, and barrique.It is full-bodied, light-footed, elegant, long, balanced and persistent with lots of glycerine. It needs to be decanted and needs a lot of time and you need a big glas for it like Zalto Burgundy. It gets better and better in the bottle for minimum one week. Or drink it in 5-10 years. 19.3/20 points.
Maybach, California, 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Amoenus, 14.6%: A longer time ago we tasted Maybach Materium from 2005 and 2006. So, now it is time to taste a recent vintage. It has a opaque purple-violet colour and has blackberry, butter, bacon, cassis and with aeration also beetroot and chocolate in the nose. It is full-bodied, a bit earthy (although there is no Cabernet Franc in it), dense, very long, phenolic, complex, structured with lots of fine tannin and a power without end. It also has cassis, black pepper and liquorice and needs to be decanted. A big glass is a recommended. This is a nearly perfect Cabernet: 19.8/20 points.
Ch. D‘Yquem, Bordeaux, 1997, 14.0%: This wine has an amber colour and is very complex with a powerful nose of hazelnut, caramel, powdered sugar, whiskey barrel, cigar box, caramel, butterscotch and toasted notes. It is full-bodied, long, elegant and has lots of glycerine. 19.3/20 points.
