After the degustation of the great Bernhard Koch 2015 Chardonnay Reserve, we decided to taste the current wines. Bernhard Koch is one of the top produces of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Pfalz.
The Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from Bernhard Koch always need time to evolve and to reach their peak. So, this tasting is to see the potential of the current releases. All wines are very young and will benefit from further storage.
The Bernhard Koch 2019 Chardonnay Reserve is a good start. The wine has a lot of blossoms, yellow plum and toasted barrique, it is full-bodied and dense with a long finish. 17.5/20 points.
Next is the Bernhard Koch 2018 Chardonnay Reserve du Fils which is balanced, full-bodied and very mineralic with crushed rocks, blossoms and mocha. It is reminiscent of a great Chablis. 18.5/20 points.
The Bernhard Koch 2019 Chardonnay Grande Reserve is the Chardonnay with the best structure and the most power. With blossoms and peach, it has full-body, high density, perfect balance, light sweetness, long finish and a great potential. 18.5/20 points.
The Bernhard Koch 2014 Pinot Noir Reserve comes with dark toast, blackberry and strawberry. It has full-body, medium long finish, balance but there is some body missing for the intense toast. 17/20 points.
If you like density, structure and power then this is for you: The Bernhard Koch 2017 Pinot Noir Grande Reserve has mocha, dark toasted barrique, strawberries, a lot of tannin, full-body, a long finish and great potential. 18.5/20 points.
The Bernhard Koch 2015 Pinot Noir Grande Reserve BK is very elegant, but lacking power and density. It has medium- to full-body, a long finish and balance. 17/20 points.
